Happy Cinco de Mayo

Explain yourself, Cinco de Mayo.

There is a common misconception that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day. Mexico fought and won their independence from Spain on September 16, 1810.

Cinco de Mayo celebrates victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla. The initial Cinco de Mayo celebration was short lived as the French invaded and occupied Mexico City a year later.

Had luchadores been involved...the French never would have made it to Mexico City.

Lucha Libre

Lucha Libre refers to all forms of professional wrestling in Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries. Characterized by high flying moves and lightning quick holds Lucha Libre is kind of like watching Jimmy Superfly Snuka on RedBull...times a million.

Luchadores are most easily recognized by their bright and colorful masks. Lucha Libre masks have a historical tie back to the ancient Aztecs. The masks are usually fashioned after animals, gods, or ancient heroes.
